There wasn't always an over abundance of lost souls. There were periods between the wars when spirits were as rare as hens' teeth. These were the 'Droughts of the Dead' when buying and selling souls took place with the sleight of claw in the blackest of markets. While most of the other Rangers just eat on the run, Zass and his tribe only hunt to catch the best souls -- full of sins from their last life. Zass always had plenty of them -- for the right price.
If Khufu, 'The Sell-Out King of Hollywood on the Nile', knew of the commercial activity in his Sewer, he would be very pleased!
